Luxury Man Purses-The Murse!

Call it what you want-man purse or satchel but the wealthier Chinese are eating it up. Men represent 45% of the $1.2-billion market for all luxury handbags in China, according to Victor Luis, president of Coach Retail International. That figure is just 7% in the U.S according to the LATimes. Murses (man purses) have become an item of status and with people becoming wealthier in China, it’s a must have for any one planning on networking with other people.

In fact, Louis Vuitton has just introduced their first Asian model, a delicious looking Canadian-Taiwanese man name Godfrey Gao. Asian men spend a lot on luxury items and it is clear the the luxury brands have realized that. Brand names like Prada, and LV typically have very “Western” like advertising. By naming their first ever Asian model, I believe that they are recognizing just how important this growing niche of customers are. I believe that other companies will follow suit very soon.

Murses have been pretty popular in China since folks started getting more affluent, mainly because luxury houses found men–at least initially–had more spending power. Plus, given the preference for cash, and since China’s largest denomination is just the 100 kwai note, some folks have to carry stacks of cash. Hence, murses!

Handy? Yes! Good looking? Most definitely not! But I do think it speaks a lot for the companies in that they are looking on more ways to advertise for their customers and appeal to their community and culture. Back in the day, I remember for HK at least if you were speaking English, the salespeople would hover over you as if you had the big bucks. Now salespeople at stores flock to anyone speaking Mandarin assuming they have lots of money. And that spokesmodel is quite the looker!
